Opt for a climate-controlled storage unit, which maintains a consistent temperature (typically 55–80°F) and humidity level (below 55%) to prevent mold, mildew, and fabric deterioration. If climate control isn’t available, choose an elevated spot within a standard unit, off the floor on pallets or shelves, to avoid moisture from the ground.

Before storing, wash and thoroughly dry all your clothing to remove any moisture, dirt, or odors that could attract mold or mildew in humid conditions. Use a dryer to remove any residual dampness. Once dry, fold or hang garments loosely and pack them in breathable packaging like cotton garment bags or acid-free boxes. For extra protection, consider vacuum-sealed bags for non-delicate items, but only if paired with a moisture absorber to remove the condensation.
Use moisture-absorbing products like cedar blocks, charcoal bags, or dehumidifier packets inside your storage boxes or wardrobe containers to keep humidity in check. Avoid overpacking. Allow air circulation around items to prevent trapped moisture. Periodically check on your stored clothing (every few months if possible) to air it out.
